Michael O'Connell, of Belmar, was crossing the street with the walk light when he was struck by 2009 Dodge pickup truck attempting to make a left turn, Nashville police said in a release. The driver, Joey Nixon, 36, had a green light but failed to yield to the pedestrian, police said. O’Connell died at the scene, police said.

Nixon was spinning his tires and speeding prior to the crash, witnesses told police.

O'Connell was a lawyer and a lobbyist, working at Pringle Quinn Anazao PC for almost 25 years.

"Michael was a beloved fixture in Trenton — and the rest of the state — known for his professionalism, affability and witty sense of humor," the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce said.  "Michael will be missed and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends and work colleagues."

O'Connell was a regular at Jacks by the Tracks in Belmar, where they called him Lawyer Mike.

"It is with the heaviest heart we mourn the loss of not just a regular, but an incredibly great friend and member of the community," the bar wrote on Facebook

"He impacted everyone at our establishment and his generosity and kindness will never be forgotten. Even in death, he has brought love and togetherness among those who have lost him which the most "Mike" thing to happen. We will miss you and your wit and your protective nature and there will always be a beer and whiskey for you here."

Meemom's, a breakfast eatery in Wall, said O'Connell had become family.

"Everyone loved chatting with Mike at the bar," the restaurant wrote on Facebook. "Hearing his stories, getting his life advice, or simply sharing a laugh. Mike, we will all miss you so much. Keep the party going to in heaven. We will keep the hearty hangover bowls going for you."
